I have lived in my home, located across the street from Don Juan Restaurant, since 1980. During the time Alberto Ferrufino has operated his restaurant, I have never had problems either with Mr. Ferrufino or the manner in which he operates it. Once, several years ago, his trash service picked up before 8:00 on a Saturday morning, long before his restaurant opens. I spoke with him about this, he immediately called the company and there has never been an early morning pick-up since. Our interaction was cordial and he was genuinely upset that the company's mistake disturbed the neighborhood.
Mr. Ferrufino has displayed remarkable patience in dealing with a few people in Mt. Pleasant, some who live nowhere near his restaurant, who are continually objecting to the operation of the restaurant: put up a fence, take it down; hide the trash, don't build a trash shed and other such harassing objections. Throughout he has tried to be a good neighbor, the latest evidence being the beautiful restoration of the restaurant's façade. I am confident that if Mr. Ferrufino is allowed to offer live music in his restaurant he will do so in a manner considerate of his neighbors. As someone old enough to remember hearing Mary Chapin Carpenter playing at local bars and restaurants, I would not want to deprive local musicians the opportunity to perfect their talents, nor the ability of the neighborhood to enjoy their performances if they choose to do so.
