(Mt. Pleasant, DC): In a major victory for Mt. Pleasant residents, the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board has ruled that music and dancing will return to restaurants in Mount Pleasant.
Over the last decade, Mount Pleasant restaurants gave up their ability to host live music and dancing to avert protests against their liquor license applications by the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Alliance (MPNA), a local civic association. The MPNA restricted live music and dancing without informing or seeking feedback from most Mount Pleasant residents. These restrictions and others (including not charging a cover, not selling discounted drinks, and not advertising outside of the neighborhood) were challenged by neighborhood groups and residents over the last year in a major neighborhood-wide campaign that culminated in a 9-hour ABC Board hearing on February 13th, 2008.
The Board released their ruling today, giving a major victory to the groups and residents who have been working to return live music and dancing to the neighborhood: Don Jaime's and Haydee's Restaurants will be able to have music and dancing seven days a week. Hours for music and dancing are: Sunday through Wednesday till 11:00 p.m., Thursday till midnight and Friday and Saturday until 1:00 p.m.
Businesses may also charge a cover. In addition, the Board struck down a provision in the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Alliance's (MPNA) Voluntary Agreement (VA) that states that Don Jaime's Restaurant must notify the MPNA before selling his business.
The Board approved and amended both the Hear Mount Pleasant and MPNA agreements to reflect the Board's decision.
Hear Mount Pleasant thanks all our neighbors and others who have worked so hard to bring live entertainment back to our community.
A celebration of the victory will be held at Haydee's Restaurant (3102 Mt. Pleasant St NW) on Sunday, April 27th starting at 4:30pm featuring live music from legendary Lilo Gonzales, Machu Tres, Mariachis, and others.
