| HEAR MOUNT PLEASANT >> Update on Fire - March 19, 2008 | ||
Update on fire relief efforts so farHear Mount Pleasant is very proud to be part of such a generous and caring community. The outpouring of support for the tenants affected by the fire has been amazing. Local restaurants provided meals for the displaced tenants all weekend. To all who have volunteered time, interpretation services, housing, etc - thank you. The response has been overwhelming and though you may not have been contacted yet, your offer has been received and passed along to the folks who are coordinating the volunteer efforts. Volunteers can continue to sign up at www.hearmountpleasant.org or In addition, please see below for additional volunteer opportunities. Residents donated $10,000 to the Columbia Heights Shaw Family Support Collaborative through the collection point at Pfeiffer's Hardware that will go directly to tenants for housing needs. Along with the baby shower for Edilma Alvarez, generous neighbors put together and delivered care packages for all the children and babies who are staying at the two hotels where displaced families are temporarily living. On top of the huge volume of donations sent to Neighbors Consejo, local residents filled the 26 foot truck that we rented with household goods that were delivered to the Serve DC site this weekend. In addition, Haydee's and Don Juan's have provided meals for the displaced and Don Jaime's donated proceeds of his brunches last weekend to the fire victims.Donations of household goods and coordinating with Serve DCNow that the immediate crisis has passed, the DC government is working to place the tenants into permanent housing and to strengthen coordination of household donations and volunteers. Donations of furniture and household goods If people have questions about where to donate large items you can call 311 or check this website http://dcema.dc.gov/ . Serve DC is accepting donations for victims of the Mt. Pleasant Street on Thursday March 20 and 21 at the DC General Warehouse on Independence Avenue behind the DC National Guard Armory. The entrance to the warehouse is on Independence Avenue, just before the entrance to the RFK Stadium Parking lot 9. Items needed for donation include: new undergarments, new, unopened toiletries, furniture and other home furnishings, seasonal items like coats,hats and gloves.Neighbors consejo needs volunteers!Neighbors Consejo 3118 16th Street is not taking any more clothing donations but still needs volunteers to help sort and inventory the items that have been donated. Please call them at 234-6855 to donate your time.Monetary DonationsHaydees and Pfeifers are both collection points for donations. Cash donations being collected at Haydees go directly to the 3145 Tenant Association. Those being collected at Pfeiffers go to the Columbia Heights Family Support Collaborative to be used to secure and subsidize permanent housing. Looking Forward Going forward, Hear Mount Pleasant is proud to be working with 3145 Tenant Association, Washington Interfaith Network (WIN) and area churches to make sure the tenants can move back into the neighborhood and to support other tenants living in poor conditions in our community. Stay tuned for more information on how to get involved in long-term efforts to build a strong, inclusive, safe and welcoming neighborhood for all our neighbors. |
